The Des Moines Community Playhouse initiates its new play reading series at 7:00 PM, Monday, Apr. 2. The script being presented is "Becky's New Car" by Steven Dietz. The evening is free; beverages will be available for purchase.

The play reading series will be held one night each month on the new stage in the theatre's upper lobby. Actors will read from scripts; there are no costumes or scenery pieces.

John Viars, Playhouse executive director, says, "The goal of this new project is to offer audiences and volunteers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with upcoming productions, as well as offer insight into new scripts and possible titles to be mounted in the future. "

"Becky's New Car" is an original comedy, a romp down the road not taken. Becky Foster is caught in middle age, middle management, and a middling marriage with no prospects for change. Then one night a socially inept and grief-struck millionaire stumbles into the car dealership where Becky works. Becky is offered nothing short of a new life. "Becky's New Car" will be presented, fully staged, on The Playhouse Mainstage, Oct. 19-Nov. 4.

Upcoming script reading presentations include "Completeness" by Itamar Moses on May 7, "Goldfish" by John Kolvenbach on June 4, and "Cadillac" by Bill Jepsen on July 2.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
