Angels in America follows several interconnected characters in New York City during the 1980s AIDS crisis. The central plot follows Prior Walter, a gay man diagnosed with AIDS, whose boyfriend Louis Ironson abandons him. Another storyline involves closeted gay Mormon lawyer Joe Pitt, his Valium-addicted wife Harper, and his mentor, the powerful lawyer Roy Cohn, who is also secretly gay. The play weaves together themes of identity, politics, religion, and human connection, incorporating supernatural elements as Prior is visited by an angel who tasks him with becoming a prophet and halting human progress.
