Halau Makana Lani is a hula school at 4294 Stanley Blvd in Pleasanton, California, led by kumu Gloria Ruiz (Auntie Gloria). It is dedicated to preserving Hawaiian culture through the teaching of hula, the Hawaiian language and the values of Aloha - love, respect, humbleness, discipline and commitment to excellence - which students are expected to practice inside and outside the classroom, including etiquette such as removing shoes and addressing the teacher as Auntie. The halau teaches both children and adults. Keiki classes include Mamane, a co-ed early beginner class for ages 8 and up covering basic hula steps, motions, noho (seated) hula and Hawaiian words, and Iliahi for teens aged 13 and up, which adds choreography, formations, posture, chanting and hula instruments.
