Opera Arlington Will Perform CARMEN Reimagined on the Soccer Pitch

Opera Arlington has announced its upcoming production of Georges Bizet's beloved masterpiece, Carmen, performing June 5th and 6th at Trinity United Methodist Church in Arlington, Texas. Joining forces with the Mansfield Philharmonic, conducted by Dr. Eldred Marshall, and brought to life on stage by director Eliza Escalante, this unique production is unlike anything opera fans have seen before.

Inspired by the upcoming soccer playoffs, Opera Arlington's production will reimagine Bizet's classic in the vibrant atmosphere of 1920s Spain during the euphoric aftermath of the Spanish national soccer team's historic Olympic medal victory, when the streets pulsed with celebration and the nation was alive with pride. Enter Escamillo, not a bullfighter in this production but instead a dashing star footballer who scored the winning goal, his charisma and bravado as formidable on the stage as on the pitch. He is adored by thousands and he knows it.

Carmen, an itinerant Romani worker as spirited as she is free, lives boldly and without apology in a world that would prefer her silence. When the rigid and tradition-bound soldier Don José falls headlong into her orbit, their connection ignites like a match struck in the dark—brilliant, consuming, and destined to burn. What unfolds is a short and tumultuous love affair that becomes one of opera's most devastating portrayals of freedom, obsession, and the impossible cost of both. This Carmen is a love letter to the beautiful game and to the enduring human need to truly live on one's own terms.

“With this summer's playoffs making Arlington a global destination for soccer fans this summer, Opera Arlington is excited to welcome new audiences into the opera house,” states Escalante. “Whether you've been a lifelong devotee of Bizet or you're simply caught up in the irresistible energy of the playoffs, this production was made for you. Opera has always been about passion at its most extreme and so has soccer. This summer, they meet right here in DFW.”

The approximate run time is 2 hours and 40 minutes with a 20-minute intermission. The show begins at 7:30 pm, with the house opening thirty minutes before each show, and is rated PG-13. Tickets cost $29 for general admission and $15 for students.
