"The words ‘intellectual' and ‘Broadway musical' were seldom mentioned in the same breath until the era of Stephen Sondheim, the dominant artistic force in the American musical theater since the 1970's," wrote Stephen Holden recently in The New York Times. Best known for
his music and/or lyrics in such hits as West Side Story, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, and Sweeney Todd, Sondheim has received seven Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an Academy Award for Best Song. On April 28 he will be keynote guest for the 5th anniversary of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities award event. Join Jac Alder, Executive Producer-Director of Theater Three in Dallas, and Steven Jones, Founding Producer of Lyric Stage in Irving, for two introductory sessions on the musical genius of Stephen Sondheim, which will feature insights, anecdotes, live performances, video collages, and Q&A.
