A CHRISTMAS CAROL Marks 37th Season at South Coast Repertory
Nothing says the holidays like South Coast Repertory's production of A Christmas Carol, an Orange County family favorite since 1980. John-David Keller directs the Charles Dickens' classic, adapted by Jerry Patch, with performances on the Segerstrom Stage Nov. 25-Dec. 24. Hal Landon Jr. is Ebenezer Scrooge, the "Bah! Humbug!" miser who has a yuletide change of heart. Tickets are available at www.scr.org.
"This play is a celebration of family, peace and unity," said Patch. "It's not just a British play, nor is it limited in scope to the 19th century. Scrooge's story embodies the very tenets of American culture-you can change yourself, you can succeed beyond your means and, after undergoing metaphorical death, you can come back and live a better life. In other words, it's never too late."
Keller said the annual production holds a special place for Orange County residents.
"A Christmas Carol is an important part of family holiday traditions," said Keller. "This production has been the first place where many audience members experienced theatre and we want to make sure that everyone continues to have the best time."
Sixteen local child actors, chosen through auditions, are featured in roles that range from the Cratchit family (including Tiny Tim) to children at an elegant evening ball.
The creative team includes Thomas Buderwitz, scenic design; Dwight Richard Odle, costume design; Donna and Tom Ruzika, lighting design; Dennis McCarthy, music arrangement and composer; Drew Dalzell, sound design; Dennis Castellano, vocal director; Joanne DeNaut, CSA, casting; Hisa Takakuwa, assistant director; Jackie S. Hill, production manager; and Talia Krispel, stage manager.
Landon is one of the longest-playing Scrooges in the nation and has been recognized for his performances and longevity by The New York Times.
In addition to Landon, the cast includes Larry Bates, Daniel Blinkoff, Richard Doyle, John-David Keller, Alex Knox, Art Koustik, Timothy Landfield, Ann Marie Lee, Rosney Mauger, Aaron McGee, William Francis McGuire, Jennifer Parsons, Calvin Picou, Erika Schindele, Kimberly Scott and Chloe Wu.
