The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz of The Hartt School Present Amiri Baraka & Blue Ark
The Hartt School and The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, in collaboration with the Artists Collective and the Jackie McLean International Arts Festival, celebrates Black History Month with a lecture and concert with poet/playwright/activist Amiri Baraka and word-music ensemble Blue Ark on Wednesday, February 3. The free lecture will be in Room 342, Fuller Music Center on the University of Hartford campus. The concert will be at Artists Collective, 1200 Albany Ave & Jackie McLean Way, Hartford at 7:30 PM. The Hartt School Presents The Tender Land
The Hartt School presents Aaron Copland's The Tender Land, Thursday, February 4 through Sunday, February 7, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Performances on Thursday through Saturday are at 7:30 PM and on Sunday at 3:00 PM. The Tender Land was composed in 1953 on a commission from Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Concerning a girl transformed into a young woman by her first experience of love, The Tender Land is set in the American Midwest during the 1930s. With melodic, easygoing music in the folkish vein, and with spoken dialogue in the style of the musical stage, the score has come to be regarded as one of Copland's finest, as he himself believed it to be. This Main Stage opera performance will be accompanied by the Hartt Symphony Orchestra. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups. The Hartt School Presents An Evening of Concerto Winners
The Hartt School presents An Evening of Concerto Winners on Friday, February 5, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater, University of Hartford. This wonderful event will feature some of the finest classical instrumental soloists in The Hartt School. This concert showcases four concerto competition winners from the 2009-2010 season, backed up by the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Hartt Symphony Orchestra. This concert is not to be missed! Concerto winners featured include Joe D'aleo, saxophone; The West End Brass Quintet; Sam Martin, violin; and Stuart Breczinski, oboe. Admission is free. The Hartt School Presents The Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series, featuring David Finckel and Wu Han
The Hartt School presents the David Finckel and Wu Han in a concert featuring the music of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Part of The Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series, the concert will take place on Thursday, February 11, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This Series has been made possible by a grant from the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the HartFord Foundation for Public Giving. A special pre-concert dinner precedes this performance and begins at 6:00 PM in the University's 1877 Club. The Hartt School Presents a Masterclass in Double Bass with Rob Nairn
The Hartt School presents a masterclass in double bass with Rob Nairn on Monday, February 15, at 2:30 PM, in Room 163, Fuller Music Center, University of Hartford. As part of the faculty of the Penn State School of Music, Guest Artist Robert Nairn teaches double bass, chamber music, excerpts classes, bass ensembles, and directs the University's Baroque Ensemble. A Native of Australia, he received his Bachelor of Music with distinction from the Canberra School of Music and a post-graduate diploma from the Berlin Musikhochschule by courtesy of a two-year DADD German Government Scholarship. He has lived and worked in Germany, England, Australia and the United States. Admission is free.

The Hartt School Present Translations
The Hartt School presents Translations on Thursday, February 18 through Sunday, February 21, at The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Theater, Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. Performances are at 7:30 PM on Thursday through Saturday and 2:00 PM on Sunday. Brian Friel's Translations takes us to 1833 Ireland and a rural schoolroom where students barter milk and eggs for a chance to learn Greek and Latin, far removed from their hardscrabble lives and their everyday Gaelic language. When English soldiers come to map and Anglicize the Irish names of the area, they spark great humor, lively romance, and heartbreaking conflict. The play explores the power struggle of languages and cultures with a tender and suspenseful story, and some unforgettable characters. The Hartt School Presents its Faculty Recital Series 2009-2010
The Hartt School presents a Faculty Recital on Sunday, February 21, at 3:00 PM, in Berkman RecitAl Hall, University of Hartford. The concert features violist Rita Porfiris, violinist Anton Miller, and pianist David Westfall, performing the rarely heard Jongen Trio, Op. 30, composed by the Franck-inspired Belgian composer in 1907. Cellist Mihai Tetel joins the ensemble for a performance of the Schumann Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. Admission is free.
