The Hartt School Announces 4/22 & 23 Concerts

The Hartt School presents a weekend of music making with the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band. On Friday, April 22, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, the Hartt Wind Ensemble performs its last concert of the 2010-2011 season, then on Saturday, April 23, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, the Hartt Symphony Band conculdes its season. Admission is $20 for each concert, with discounts for seniors, students, and groups. Admission is free for University of Hartford students, faculty, and staff with current University ID. Under the direction of Glen Adsit, the Hartt Wind Ensemble concert features Hartt Double Bass Professor Robert Black performing Charles Rochester Young's Concerto for Double Bass and Wind Ensemble, as well as the premier of a work by internationally recognized composer Susan Botti. Other works being performed include Recoil by Joseph Schwantner; Heroes Lost and Fallen by David Gillingham; and Lullaby for Noah by Hartt Composition faculty member Joseph Turrin.

The Hartt Symphony Band presents "Percussion Galore." Guest artist Dr. Jason Baker, Assistant Professor of Percussion at Mississippi State University, performs David Gillingham's Concert for Marimba with the Symphony Band. Dr. Baker is a native of Connecticut and was a classmate of conductor Matthew Aubin at the University of Connecticut.

In addition, the Hartt Symphony Band performs Blithe Bells by Percy Grainger; Glass Ceiling by Robert Maggio, with guest conductor Adam Williamson; Easter Monday on the White House Lawn by John Philip Sousa; Nitro by Frank Ticheli, with Glen Adsit as guest conductor; and Symphony No. 6 by Vincent Persichetti. These works all feature the percussion section in a variety of ways.

The Hartt School is the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre. Founded in 1920, Hartt has been an integral part of the University of Hartford since its charter merged the then Hartt School of Music, the Hartford Art School, and Hillyer College to create the University in 1957. 2010 marked Hartt's 90th year of providing world class performing arts education to students in Greater-Hartford and around the world. With more than 400 concerts, recitals, plays, master classes, dance performances, and musical theatre productions a year, performance is central to Hartt's curriculum.
