Cleveland Public Theatre & Teatro Publico de Cleveland Present EN EL TIEMPO DE LAS MARIPOSAS/IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES

Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) and Teatro Publico de Cleveland (TPC) present the regional premiere of En el Tiempo de las Mariposas, a play by Caridad Svich based on the novel by Julia Alvarez. The production is directed by Julia Rosa Sosa and will be performed in Spanish, with English subtitles, by TPC ensemble members and will run February 22 - March 10, 2018, in CPT's historic Gordon Square Theatre.

Following their acclaimed productions of Fabio Rubiano Orjuela's Labio de Liebre (The Lip of the Hare) in 2017 and Gabriel Calderón's Uz, El Pueblo in 2016 andMi Muñequita in 2015, Teatro Publico de Cleveland-CPT's resident Latin American theatre ensemble-returns to the stage with a fourth Spanish language production. Based on the award-winning, nationally best-selling novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, this true life story reveals the beauty of courage, sisterhood, and community resistance to injustice. In the dictatorial regime of General Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, four sisters-code-named "the butterflies"-rise up against all odds, sacrificing everything to bring equality and democracy to their country.

En el Tiempo de las Mariposas / In the Time of the Butterflies will be performed in Spanish, with English subtitles thanks to the generous support of The City of Cleveland's Cable Television Minority Arts and Education Fund.

And in this time in which we see a rise of fascistic viewpoints, it is important to remember the journeys of so many countries who went down that road before, and we can be inspired by the resistance and sacrifice people have made."

En el Tiempo de las Mariposas / In the Time of the Butterflies (February 22 - March 10, 2018) previews Thursday, February 22. Press Night is Friday, February 23 and the show runs through Saturday, March 10. Performances are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday nights at 7:30pm in CPT's Gordon Square Theatre, located at 6415 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44102, in the heart of the Gordon Square Arts District.

Tickets are $12-30. Students/Seniors receive $3 off on Friday and Saturday nights. All Thursdays and Mondays are $12.

BIOGRAPHIES OF KEY ARTISTS

Caridad Svich (PLAYWRIGHT) received a 2012 OBIE Award for Lifetime Achievement in the theatre, a 2012 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award and a NNPN Rolling World Premiere for Guapa, and the 2011 American Theatre Critics Association Primus Prize for her play The House of the Spirits, based on Isabel Allende's novel. She has won the National Latino Playwriting Award (sponsored by Arizona Theatre Company) twice, including in the year 2013 for her play Spark. She has been short-listed for the PEN Award in Drama four times, including in the year 2012 for her play Magnificent Waste. In 2018-2019, her play RED BIKE will receive a NNPN Rolling World Premiere at theatres across the U.S.

Her works in English and Spanish have been seen at venues across the US and abroad, among them Arena Stage's Kogod Cradle Series, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Gala Hispanic Theatre, Denver Center Theatre, 59E59, The Women's Project, Halcyon Theatre, Woodshed Collective @ McCarren Park Pool, Repertorio Espanol, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Lighthouse Poole UK, Teatro Mori (Chile), Artheater-Cologne (Germany), Ilkhom Theater (Uzbekistan), Teatro Espressivo (Costa Rica), Welsh Fargo Stage (Wales), Homotopia Festival UK, SummerWorks festival in Toronto, CEAD Festival in Montreal, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival/UK. Julia Rosa Sosa (DIRECTOR) Julia Rosa Sosa was born and raised on the US-MX border. She is a young theatre director that has focused her time during and after graduating from The University of Texas at El Paso to work on stories that resonate with the community by making them laugh, cry, or just remind them about home (which she does daily). Some titles she has worked on are: Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Assistant Director, Mojada: Una Medea in Los Angeles by Luis Alfaro; Sazón de Mujer by Victor Hugo Rascón Banda (UTEP); A Solid Home by Elena Garro (Latin@ and Chican@ Theatre Series); and The Cuban Swimmer by Milcha Sanchez-Scott (UTEP).

Caridad Svich (ESCRITORA) ha recibido el premio OBIE 2012 por su Trayectoria Teatral, el premio Edgerton Foundation New Play 2012 y el NNPN Rolling World Premiere por Guapa, igualmente el premio de la Asociación Americana de Críticos de Teatro 2011 por su obra The House of the Spirits, basada en la novela de Isabel Allende.
