Review: EURYDICE at DreamWrights

DreamWrights presents Eurydice from April 24th to May 2 under the direction of Anja Homberger.  Eurydice was written by Sarah Ruhl and premiered in 2003 in Madison, Wisconsin and received multiple award nominations in 2008 after opening off-broadway at Second Stage Theater.

The 2006 musical, Hadestown, has renewed interest in Greek mythology and the tragic love story between Orpheus and Eurydice.  Ruhl’s play focuses on Eurydice’s perspective and her relationship with her father, who she meets in the underworld.  Nana Yates portrayed Eurydice with honest emotions and strength through her grief.  Christ Drinkut, Eurydice’s father, was a strong paternal character with warmth and compassion.  Anshel Drayton portrayal of Orpheus was determined and committed to his love.

Anja Homberger’s interpretation of the underworld was unique and inspired by Alice in Wonderland.  Kristen Fraser brought that vision to life with costume designs for the ensemble cast based on different characters from beloved children’s novel.  Rodd Robertson infused pieces of Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter’s tea party in his scenic design for the play.

The talented cast includes Nala Yates (Eurydice), Anshel Drayton (Orpheus), Chris Drinkut (Father), Crystal Ganong (Nasty Interesting Man, Lily Ganong (Child/Lord of Underworld), Amanda McClair (Big Stone), Olivia Downs (Loud Stone), and Nova Journell (Little Stone).

This is a unique look at the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with themes of grief, love, death, and loss.  Any fan of Hadestown would enjoy this production.  I highly recommend checking out the play before it’s too late!  Click the link below for more information and tickets to the show!
