HOWL PLAYWRIGHTS CELEBRATES 11TH SEASON WITH NEW PLAY READINGS AT PLAN BEE FARM BREWERY

Howl Playwrights, the Hudson Valley theater company dedicated to developing bold new work, will continue its 11th anniversary season with staged readings at Plan Bee Farm Brewery, featuring three original plays by regional playwrights.

Founded by playwrights David Simpatico and Darrah Cloud, Howl Playwrights is dedicated to nurturing, inspiring, and empowering the development and sharing of new and challenging works by established and emerging playwrights. Through book-in-hand readings, workshops, and productions, the company champions plays that tackle serious subjects with humor and insight, take artistic risks when called for, and seek to entertain while challenging audiences to see the world in new ways. Diversity, inclusion, and sustainability remain central to the company's mission.

The readings showcase the range of voices and stories that have become a hallmark of Howl's programming.

On Sunday, September 27, Howl presents The General by Katherine Burger. Set in the 1990s, this comedy follows a mother and her two adult daughters as they grapple with family history in the wake of a death, discovering unexpected pathways toward understanding and reconciliation.

The reading will be directed by Katherine Burger and feature Jane Ives as Arlene, Lori Wilner as Ellie, Danielle Frimer as Dulcie, and Jamie Watson reading stage directions.

Next will be Mia, Myself, and A.I. by Katie Ryan. Struggling to finish a grant application that could change her life, a stressed-out sci-fi writer must navigate conflicting advice from her brutally practical robot therapist and her lovingly distracted mom.

The reading will be directed by Sydnie Grossberg Ronga, with Rebecca Brown Adelman as Gracie, Jane Ives as Mia, Dean Temple as CM, Jamie Watson reading stage directions.

Following is Ode to Aubrey by Dwight Watson. In her search to align the stars and find her mother, ten-year-old Aubrey discovers an unlikely companion and embarks on a journey that reveals the possibility of friendship, wonder, and a perfectly plotted "Flight Plan."

Directed by Dwight Watson, the reading features Danielle Frimer as Aubrey, Norm Magnusson as Billy, and Jamie Watson reading stage directions.

Now kicking off its eleventh season, Howl Playwrights continues to emerge from the challenges of the pandemic years and return to its roots: gathering artists and audiences together to experience new work in a live setting. Earlier this year, the company's festival Howl at the Center drew enthusiastic audiences to The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck.

As The Millbrook Independent wrote, "There's a bright, speeding comet in the neighborhood and if you don't look up at The Center for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck this weekend, you will miss what will most likely be the most amusing local theatrical experience of this year."

Ten years in, the company remains true to its founding belief: that adventurous new plays—and the artists who create them—deserve a place to howl.
