The Classical Theatre of Harlem's annual summer Uptown Shakespeare in the Park production (in partnership with City Park Foundation's SummerStage Festival) is off to a rousing start! From a visit during tech with a local student group, to our opening weekend, the stage is set for a great summer! Last night, over 650 people witnessed the magic of our first preview performance of The Tempest at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park. Director Carl Cofield on The Tempest, freedom, and independence:
"Prospero's magical island could be anywhere. Our production references the enchanting island of Hispaniola, the island that is home to both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The history of Haiti is nothing short of magical. This tiny Caribbean country won its independence by defeating three European superpowers: France, Britain and Spain, demonstrating the same fighting spirit found in Caliban, and the same longing for freedom as Ariel. The Tempest highlights the dynamics of freedom and captivity, imprisonment and rebellion, authority and tyranny. My hope is that after spending time with these characters, we learn something about ourselves." On Thursday, 4th grade students from Horizons at Saint David's visited our final tech, and had an opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes "magic" of the technical science behind aerial, lighting, and sound design. Pictured above, they were treated to a fantastic rendition of the story of The Tempest told by Ron Cephas Jones, our very own Prospero! (We'll be sharing more about this, and our other programs for young people later this week.) The audience gathered for the first preview performance of The Tempest. Don't miss your chance to see this summer's production! Playing now through July 26 only. FREE. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. NO TICKETS REQUIRED.
Just come to the amphitheater and pick out your seat!
