FOOLPROOF to Have Staged Reading at Syracuse University Department of Drama

The Syracuse University Department of Drama and the New Works/New Voices initiative will present a staged reading of “Foolproof,” with music by Sonya Hayden, lyrics by Megan Loughran and book co-written by Hayden and Loughran. Directed by Syracuse University Department of Drama Chair Eleanor Holdridge, performances of “Foolproof” will be held April 23 through 26 in the Clark Theatre at the Syracuse Stage/SU Drama Complex, 820 East Genesee St.

The Syracuse University Department of Drama’s New Works/New Voices (NW/NV) initiative supports the development of new musicals by writers and composers whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented in the musical theatre canon. Each year, one musical is selected through a national call for submissions to be developed in collaboration with Syracuse University students and faculty. “Foolproof” is the 2026 NW/NV selection, chosen from a pool of 150+ submissions.

"In our fifth year of New Works/New Voices, I’m incredibly proud of the role our students and faculty play in supporting the next generation of musical theatre by developing new work and amplifying voices that haven’t always been heard in the field,” said NW/NV Artistic Director Kathleen Wrinn.

A brassy, toe-tapping musical comedy, “Foolproof” finds close-knit sisters Jo, Mary and Curly in the Brooklyn movie theater where they work, surviving the Great Depression on little more than popcorn and hope. Upon learning the beloved theater is about to close, they hatch a screwball scheme to buy it.
