Valuable Oskar Schindler Correspondence Set for Auction

By:

The New York Times Arts Beat blog reports that a valuable letter written by Oskar Schindler will be auctioned off by a New Hampshire auction house. The German businessman, who is responsible for saving the lives of 1,200 Jews from the Nazi death camps, was the inspiration behind the 1993 Academy Award winning film SCHINDLER'S LIST.

According to the report, the letter, dated Aug. 22, 1944, "gives permission to relocate an enamelware factory from Krakow, Poland, to Czechoslovakia."

"This is the first document I have seen verifying this move and it is quite important because I thought it took him much longer to get such permission," David Crowe, a Holocaust historian and Schindler biographer, said in a statement, according to Reuters. "Most importantly, if Oskar had not gotten such permission, there would have been no Schindler's List."

The letter will be auctioned off online through August 14th. Currently it has brought in 21 bids with a present price tag of $21,000.
