Former Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) said today that she's "seeing a bipartisanship that was not there just last year" in Congress, she told co-hosts Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell in an interview that was broadcast live today, April 15, 2013 on CBS THIS MORNING on the CBS Television Network (7:00 AM-9:00 AM).

Hutchinson credits the change to a "frustration that we couldn't make real deals that had long-term impacts."

On gun control, Hutchinson said she thought "background checks are certainly the way to go." She added that although background checks may not have stopped the shootings at Newtown, "it will affect our future. It will." Watch the appearance in full below!

Excerpts from the interview are below.

Norah O'Donnell: Excited to get to this book about pioneering women in Texas that many people have not heard of, but first let's ask you about the news today, which is certainly what's happening in the Senate, the body you used to be a part of. Big deal, of course, immigration tomorrow. Do you think the Senate and Congress will finally be able to get something done?

SEN. KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON: You know, I do. I'm seeing a bipartisanship that was not there just last year when I was still there, where Democrats and Republicans are getting together in equal numbers. They're talking through some of the toughest issues, and immigration reform certainly has been tough. But other issues, the gun issues, and even the budget. I think that if this could open up the grand bargain, which would get our deficit down and get our fiscal house in order, it would be just a breath of fresh air that the whole world is looking at.
