The film is one of China's highest grossing films and attracted an audience because of the story's backdrop of Seattle; separately, it also spurred some debate because the lead character, played by controversial actress Tang Wei (Lust, Caution), undertakes the trip from Beijing to Seattle to give birth, sidestepping the one-child policy.
