The Weather Channel to Report Live from 139th Kentucky Derby

By: May. 02, 2013

One of the oldest thoroughbred races in the United States, and the first leg of the storied Triple Crown, will hit the track May 4. The annual event is an amazing display of pageantry, speed, beauty, power and...weather.

On-Camera Meteorologist Stephanie Abrams will be having some fun with the unique Derby traditions and talking odds with the handicappers. She will discuss how weather conditions impact the horses and jockeys - and can ultimately affect the outcome of the race. Coverage will include the Churchill Downs race day forecast and special editorial features such as historical race day weather, interviews with experts, and more.

Weather is a major factor in the Kentucky Derby. Historically, nearly half of the races have experienced rain at some point in the day, and temperatures have ranged from 36 to 94 degrees. It's not only a battle of the world's best thoroughbreds; the Kentucky Derby can also be a battle of the elements - for the jockeys, the horses and the spectators.

Reporting live on The Weather Channel from Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, site of the 139th Kentucky Derby during The Following shows:

- "Wake Up With Al" and "Morning Rush" - Friday, May 3 (5:30-11:00 a.m. ET)
- "Weekend View" - Saturday, May 4, for Derby Day (5:00-11:00 a.m. ET)
