Deadline reports that The CW is developing a new teen drama based on the life of Mary Queen of Scots. The historical British monarch will be featured in the new pilot, REIGN, which the network is pitching as 'Game of Thrones meets Marie Antoinette'.

According to the report, Mary will be reimagined as a "warrior queen" with a "girl posse." Mary Stuart reigned as queen regnant of Scotland from December 1542 to July 1567. She was famously executed after being found guilty of plotting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England, her first cousin once removed.

Laurie McCarthy (CSI: Miami) and Stephanie SenGupta (Hawaii Five-0) will serve as writers and executive producers on Reign.

Other pilots currently in the works at The CW include a remake of the UK series Metropolis from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and contemporary reboots of both Alice in Wonderland and Great Expectations.
