The 19th Annual imagineNATIVE Film And Media Arts Festival Returns

The 19th Annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival returns October 17 - 21, 2018 in Toronto to present an incredible selection of film, video, audio, and digital & interactive media made by Indigenous screen content creators.

imagineNATIVE will present a two-screening showcase of work by filmmaker and community producer Marjorie Beaucage (Métis). Artist, curator and academic Lisa Myers curated two programmes featuring the groundbreaking work of this significant media artist, activist, and leader. This retrospective showcase provides a glimpse into Beaucage's extensive filmography, the first on October 19 and the second on October 20, which is followed by a conversation with Marjorie Beaucage & Lisa Myers.

This year's Art Crawl, Sponsored by RBC, takes place entirely in the 401 Richmond building, visiting six galleries on October 19. The Art Crawl will begin at Urban Space Gallery with RBC, where audiences can try their hand with a digital paintbrush and canvas. The Art Crawl will then continue to: Current Terrain, a range of works by Indigenous artists currently living in Alberta demonstrating the vitality of contemporary art in the province, curated by Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective (A Space Gallery - in partnership with Vtape and Native Women in the Arts. Until October 21); Toolkit for Revolution, where notions and understandings of revolution are explored through the activist poster work of the Sámi collective Suohpanterror and Anishinaabe artist Jay Soule (Trinity Square Video until December 1); Passages featuring the work of Olivia Whetung and curated by Tania Willard (Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, until December 1); On Being Illiberal featuring the work of Carl Beam, Merritt Johnson, and Fallon Simard and curated by Suzanne Morrissette (Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art, until November 24); and Toronto'. Trialogue featuring the work of Simon M. Benedict and Sonia Robertson and curated by Guy Sioui Durand (YYZ Artists' Outlet, until December 12).

imagineNATIVE is also pleased to co-present two exhibitions with new partner galleries.Coney Island Baby features the work of Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Chandra Melting Tallow, and Tania Willard at Gallery TPW until November 3. Chandra Melting Tallow will perform a live score with the screening of Coney Island Baby on October 18 at 6:30pm. Loner Culture features the work of Thirza Cuthand, KITE, and Fallon Simard and is curated by Lindsay Nixon at InterAccess until October 27.

imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival will also host the Industry Days, October 16 - 20, 2018 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. This new, expanded five-day series offers FREE panels and workshops and is the world's only dedicated market for Indigenous screen content. These professional development activities bring together industry leaders from around the world in discourse and discussion relevant to Indigenous media creators. Highlights include: How to Get to SESAME STREET (via imagineNATIVE), the firstimagineNATIVE Industry Awards Reception, and International Networking Day.

For the first time, imagineNATIVE will present the iNdigital Space, a large-scale presentation of digital and interactive work in a newly curated space on the main floor of the TIFF Bell Lightbox. iNdigital Space is a free, interactive showcase of more than a dozen VR, games, online platforms and digital web series which will be on display October 16 - 21, 2018. The iNdigital Space is the first step in a multi-year process to enhance the presentation, development and discourse on Indigenous-made digital and interactive media at imagineNATIVE. This year's selection of audio works is also presented at the iNdigital Space and features sound art and audio documentaries by artists including Janet Rogers and Rosanna Deerchild.
