TOP GUN, the film which made a bona fide movie star out of little known actor Tom Cruise back in 1986, will be returning to the big screen in 3-D for a special six-day engagement in Imax theaters beginning February 8. A limited-edition 'mini-reprint' of the original 1986 film poster will also be handed out to ticketholders.

In addition, an all-new Top Gun 3-D Blu-ray will be released on February 19 which will include the new 3-D conversion, as well as a six-part documentary, including interviews with Cruise, music videos (including Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone) and a commentary by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the late director Tony Scott. The project marked one of the last for Scott prior to his death in August.

"Some of the action scenes were of course a little more difficult but they did a brilliant job," Bruckheimer told USA Today of the 3-D conversion. "It really is exciting when they land on those carriers, and the dogfights. You really think Tony shot it in 3-D. Tony was thrilled, and he was a perfectionist."

The story of an elite group of pilots competing to be the best in their class and earn the title of "TOP GUN" captured the imagination of a generation and earned a worldwide box office of over $350 million upon its release. The film stars Tom Cruise as Maverick and Kelly McGillis as his civilian instructor. The film also stars Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan.

The producer told USA that it was a pleasure to watch Cruise perform at the dawn of his acting career. "It was just wonderful to see the young kid who became this major movie star. I'm sure Top Gun helped," he says.
