TMZ reports the sad news that Uggie the dog, best known for his appearance in the 2011 Academy Award-winning film THE ARTIST, has passed away at the age of 13.

The Jack Russell terrier, who also was featured in the film adaptation of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, starring Reese Witherspoon, was put down on Friday in Los Angeles after his struggle with a prostate tumor.

Owned by ANIMAL trainer Oscar Von Muller, Uggie was the recipient of the Palm Dog Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for his deft stunt work in THE ARTIST. In addition, he was the first dog to have the honor of putting his paw prints into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
