Sirius XM Radio announced today that it will offer listeners live coverage of the renowned Alfred E. Smith Foundation Dinner, which will feature keynote speeches by President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney tonight, October 18, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

The special will air nationwide on The Catholic Channel (SiriusXM channel 129) from 9:00 to 10:00 pm ET and will be hosted by Catholic Channel program director Father Jonathan Morris and Father Dave Dwyer, CSP, host of The Busted Halo Show on The Catholic Channel.

Father Morris and Father Dwyer will discuss the history of the Al Smith Dinner and its significance as a presidential election year event.  Listeners will get live coverage of President Obama's and Senator Romney's speeches in their entirety as well as the remarks of His Eminence, Timothy CardinAl Dolan, Archbishop of New York, who extended the invitations to both candidates for an evening of "positive, upbeat, patriotic, enjoyable civil discourse."

Sponsored by The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation and named after former New York Governor Al Smith, the first Catholic nominated as a candidate for President in 1928, this black tie charity event was first initiated by then New York Archbishop, His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Spellman in 1945.  Over the years the Al Smith Dinner has attracted many of the country's preeminent political figures and becomes especially significant in a presidential election year, when one or both candidates will take a break from campaigning on the issues to engage in a more genteel and lighthearted discourse.

The funds raised at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner are to support Catholic Healthcare Programs throughout the New York Metropolitan Area, which are awarded in the form of a foundation grant.

After tomorrow night's debut broadcast, The Catholic Channel's coverage of the Al Smith Dinner will be available on SiriusXM On Demand for subscribers listening via the SiriusXM Internet Radio App for smartphones and other mobile devices or online at SiriusXM.com.  Visit www.siriusxm.com/ondemand for more info on SiriusXM On Demand.

CardinAl Dolan can be heard every week on SiriusXM hosting his talk show, Conversation with CardinAl Dolan, (Wednesdays at 7:00 am ET) on The Catholic Channel.  On the program, which is co-hosted by Father Dwyer, CardinAl Dolan interviews special guests and addresses a variety of topics from current events to faith, entertainment, literature and sports.
