San Diego Italian Film Festival 2019 Monthly Series at La Paloma

Thursday, January 24: Lasciati andare

Italian star Toni Servillo is Elia, is a Jewish psychoanalyst from a purely Freudian school of thought. Due to his austere and detached manner, he is known to immediately inspire awe in his patients. Elia lives alone in a flat on the same floor as his ex-wife, Giovanna, with whom he is still secretly in love. After a minor illness, his doctor prescribes an iron-rich diet and physical activity to lose a few extra kilos. That is how Elia chances upon Claudia, a personal trainer with the cult of physique but clearly not of mind.

Thursday, February 21: Ammore e malavita (Love and Bullets)

In Naples, Ciro is a feared killer. Along with Rosario, he is one of the two "tigers" at the service of Don Vincenzo, "'o re d'o pesce" (the king of fish), and his astute wife, Donna Maria. We also meet Fatima, a young nurse and a dreamer. The two worlds are apparently very distant but fated to collide. When Fatima finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, Ciro is given the job of getting rid of the girl who has seen too much. But things don't go as planned. The two end up face to face, recognize each other, and rediscover in each other the never-forgotten love of their adolescence in this musical comedy unlike any other.

Thursday, March 14: L'ordine delle cose (The Order of Things)

Corrado, a policeman for the European task force in charge of immigration control, is on a field assignment in Libya. During a night patrol in the desert, he meets Swada, a young Somali woman who left her war-ravaged country in order to try and reach Europe. Corrado gives her something to eat and drink before she resumes her journey. But their destinies are now linked, and Corrado will soon find himself faced with a choice: respect his orders and the law, or save Swada's life.

Thursday, April 11: Taranta on the road

The day after the Arab Spring of 2011, Amira and Tarek, two Tunisian migrants with nothing in common, reach the Italian coast. By chance, they find themselves both seeking help from a music band from Salento, Apulia, IN SEARCH OF success around festivals and weddings. The band mistakes them as a couple that's going to have a child and the band members decide to help them to reach France. The trip, fear, love, the uncertain future and the desire to find their own way join all in a unique experience that, perhaps, will change their lives forever. A beautiful comedy full of music, hope, and good vibes!

Thursday, May 9: La ragazza del mondo (Worldly Girl)

What happens when a Jehovah's Witness falls in love with a "worldly person"? And what does it mean to be a worldly person? This complicated love story takes place within the clashes between reality and the closed world of religious sects and speaks to anyone who has experienced a FORBIDDEN relationship. Giulia lives in the closed world of the church of the Jehovah's Witnesses, which fiercely excludes those on the outside. Libero lives in the world of everyone else, those who make mistakes, who get by trying again, and who love unconditionally. When Julia meets Libero, she discovers the possibility that another destiny may be open to her, with everything to choose-even if the choice leads to being completely cut off from the world she belongs to. Libero will give Giulia the biggest gift of love of all: the freedom to belong to the world, a new world with a bright future.

Thursday, June 13: Io sono tempesta (I am Tempesta)

Numa Tempesta is a fascinating, charismatic businessman at the top of his game. Driven by a ruthless, RELENTLESS need to succeed, Numa will stop at nothing to close a deal, even if it means bending the law. That's until the law catches up to him and to avoid prison, Numa is sentenced to a year of community service in a homeless shelter (a clear and hysterical reference to Silvio Berlusconi...). While there, Numa cannot conduct any business, but he must close the deal of the century or lose his fortune. It will take all Numa's skill to find a solution, and he may just find it where he least expects it.

All tickets for individual movies are $12 ($8 SDIFF Members/Students/Military), and can be purchased at the door or online at http://sdiff.yapsody.com/.
