Showbiz411 reports exclusively that playwright Sam Shepard is currently in talks to star in the upcoming indie film COLD IN JULY. The actor would join previously announced cast member Michael C. Hall in the film.

The drama is based on Joe R. Landsale's novel of the same name and will feature Hall as, "a family man who shoots an intruder in his home. Then the dead intruder's ex con father shows up." Sources tell the site's Roger Friedman that Shepard will take on the role of Ben Russell. Jim Mickle will direct from his own script with Nick Damici.

Shepard most recently appeared on screen in Safe House and Darling Companion and will next appear with Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly, as well as Mud and Out of the Furnace. The actor was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff in 1983.

The playwright is the author of the plays Buried Child, True West, Heartless, Ages Of The Moon, Operation Sidewinder, Curse of the Starving Class, A Lie of the Mind, Fool for Love and more. Buried Child won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979.
