James Earl Jones, Emmy Award winning actor of both stage and screen (Star Wars trilogy, Dr. Strangelove), will be hosting a new informative segment of Behind the Scenes. Behind the Scenes is an award winning short-form documentary production that is distributed to public television stations across the United States. Each segment is produced by an award-winning team of writers, producers, and videographers; additionally, all segments must pass high quality assurance standards before being approved for air. This new segment will focus on medication development and safety.

Prescription drugs help millions of Americans lead full and healthy lives. However, as more Americans are taking prescription drugs, the risks of adverse events have increased as well. In 2008, the FDA received over 100,000 reports of adverse drug events. These events range from minor side-effects to major COMPLICATIONS that can lead to death or disability. There are significant concerns that the current process undertaken by the FDA to approve prescription drugs is flawed, permitting potentially dangerous drugs onto the market before their risks are fully understood. On the other side, there are also concerns that slowing the FDA drug approval process may hamper or stop the approval of life-saving drugs, which could be devastating for treating or curing various diseases.

These topics will be discussed in the new informative segment. The program is not produced by PBS, who is a content provider of programs like FRONTLINE and Masterpiece Classics. This program is independently produced and delivered to Public Television stations.
