Matt Smith Cast in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

Matt Smith is joining the STAR WARS: EPISODE IX cast, according to Variety. It's unknown who Smith will be playing in the film, which is currently in production in the U.K.

This casting news comes not long after it was announced that LOST's Dominic Monaghan would also be joining the cast.

Smith joins returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, as well as newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Naomi Ackie.

Billy Dee Williams will return to the Star Wars franchise, reprising his role as Lando Calrissian. Carrie Fisher will also appear as Leia Organa using previously unreleased footage shot for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO.

J.J. Abrams who directed The Force Awakens has returned to direct Episode IX.

Smith is best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor on the hit BBC series, DOCTOR WHO. He was also Emmy-nominated for his performance as Prince Philip in Netflix's THE CROWN. You can see Smith next playing Charles Manson in CHARLIE SAYS, which premieres at the Venice Film Festival.
