According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lifetime has cast Kelli Garner (The Aviator, Pan Am) as Marilyn Monroe for its upcoming miniseries MARILYN.

The series, based on J. Randy Taraborrelli's book titled "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe", will be written by Stephen Kronish ("The Kennedys", "24"), with Laurie Collyer set to direct.

Susan Sarandon will play Monroe's mentally ill mother, Gladys.

Lifetime's official description of the series reads: "Marilyn is both the personification of sex, whose first marriage ironically collapses because of her frigidity, and a fragile artist who seeks the approval and protection of men. But after tumultuous marriages with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, she realizes she has the strength to stand on her own. She becomes the face and voice of an era, yet wants most of all to be someone's mother and someone's little girl. She's the Marilyn you haven't seen before, the artist who, by masking the truth with an image, gives her greatest performance."

The series joins a host of other small screen adaptations set to debut on Lifetime, including Anita Diamant's "The Red Tent", Stephen King telepic "Big Driver," and "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" based on series star Dustin Diamond's, "Behind the Bell."

Garner's upcoming projects include When I Live My Live Over Again and Americana. She has appeared on the big screen in Horns, Taking Woodstock, Lars and the Real Girl, Born Killers, The Aviator and more. Among her small screen credits are in Pan Am and My Generation.
