Deadline.com reports that Julianne Moore has been offered the role of the "nightmarish religious fanatic mother" Margaret White in MGM's remake of the 1976 horror film CARRIE. The film, to be directed by Kimberly Pierce, will star Chlore Moretz in the title role. Kevin Misher will produce.

CARRIE follows the story of a teen-aged girl who possesses telepathic powers that wreak havoc as she approaches her puberty years. It is based on Stephen King's 1974 best selling-novel.

In recent months, Moore, has been rumored to be a top contender to play the role. The original film, directed by Brian De Palma, starred Piper Laurie as the mother and Sissy Spacek as Carrie. Both actresses received Oscar nominations for their performances.

Moore was most recently seen portraying Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin in HBO's 'Game Change'.
