The Hollywood Reporter reports exclusively that Jennifer Lopez has signed on to star in an upcoming film about the real drama of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped for 69 days in 2010. The actress will join previously reported cast mates Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro.

Banderas will take on the role of Mario Sepulveda, described as "the charismatic miner nicknamed "Super Mario." Sheen will play a miner's father, while Santoro will be another trapped miner.

THE 33 will be produced by Mike Medavoy and will mark Lopez's first major role since this year's action-thriller Parker. Patricia Riggen will helm from a screenplay written by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera. Production is set to get underway this fall on location in Chile.

Medavoy acquired the rights to the story of the 33 miners in 2011. The catastrophe and ensuing rescue made headlines throughout the world.
