The producers of In Focus with Martin Sheen have announced an upcoming report on how oil platforms can actually be part of a robust underwater ecosystem.

In Focus with Martin Sheen is an independently produced television program appearing on public television. The show is hosted by the legendary Martin Sheen. Over the last 50 years Mr. Sheen has established himself as one of the most respected actors in Hollywood as well as a tireless philanthropist. In Focus Martin Sheen explores how individuals, communities, and industry are working together with government to create a healthier environment.

Underneath the surface, oil rigs can provide a gathering place for a kaleidoscope of underwater creatures. The hard surfaces are a place where food can gather for vast underwater ecosystems. In Focus PBS is talking to environmental experts to see how older oil platforms can be left behind to be the cornerstones of artificial reefs that can be home to several species of underwater life. States that have oil rigs off their coasts are also reaping financial benefits from the programs by splitting the savings from decommissioned oil rigs that are not disassembled with the oil companies. The program is helping to build more diverse fish populations that can be a food source for humans in the future.

The producers of In Focus with Martin Sheen are expecting to have the report ready for broadcast later this year.
