Deadline.com reports that HBO has ordered a 'direct to series', single-camera comedy from Christopher Guest titled FAMILY TREE. Guest will direct the series which he created and co-wrote with his frequent collaborator Jim Piddock ("Best in Show," "A Mighty Wind"). He will also appear on the series and executive produce along with Karen Murphy.

The documentary-style comedy will follow Tom Chadwick, played by 'Bridesmaids' star Chris O'Dowd, described as a "30-year-old man who loses his job and his girlfriend and begins investigating his family's unusual past after inheriting a mysterious box of belongings from a great aunt he'd never met."

While the order for the series is not yet finalized, it is expected to be around 8 episodes. A Lucky Giant, which is a part of NBC Universal International Television Production, will produce the project.
