Alfonso Cuaron's 3D space thriller GRAVITY, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, is keeping its hold on the competition this weekend with $12.7 million Friday and headed toward $44 million in its second weekend, which would bring its overall fume to $124 million by Sunday, according to Deadline.

Academy Award winners Bullock ("The Blind Side," "The Proposal") and Clooney ("Up in the Air," "Syriana") star in this heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.

Real-life pirate tale CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, starring Tom Hanks, comes in second place in its debut weekend, with $8.5 million on Friday and aims for $26 million by Sunday -- right in line with Sony/Columbia Pictures' projections.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award-winner Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage.

Sony Pictures' CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 sits happy at No. 3 with $3.5 million on Friday and hoping for an overall gross of $78.5 million by the end of the weekend.

Trailing behind, in fourth is Open Road Films' MACHETE KILLS, directed by Robert Rodriguez, which opened to just $1.4 million on Friday and hacking toward less than $4 million for the weekend, which is less than half originally estimated. The action thriller, starring Danny Trejo and Sofia Vergara, is overflowing with a starry marquee. Also in the cast are Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard, Carlos Estevez, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson.
