Deadline reports that Grey's Anatomy actor Eric Dane will star in TNT's upcoming action drama pilot THE LAST SHIP. The project will be executive produced by Michael Bay and directed by Jonathan Mostow. Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane co-wrote the script. The actor joins recently announced cast members Michaela McManus, Charles Parnell, Travis Van Winkle, Christina Elmore and Sam Spruell.

THE LAST SHIP is based on William Brinkley's novel by the same name. It will tell the story of "the crew of a naval destroyer who, after a global catastrophe decimates the Earth's population, are forced to confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors."

Dane will take on the role of Captain Tom Chandler, described as "a career Navy man - authoritative, decisive, fair, courageous and a born leader, respected and loved by men and women in his command - and a loving father and husband who's never home as much as he'd like to be."

Dane is best known for his role of Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on the medical drama television series Grey's Anatomy, and has recently branched into film, co-starring in Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque.
