Cobi Jones to Call LA Galaxy Games on Time Warner Cable SportsNet
Time Warner Cable SportsNet has announced that Galaxy legend Cobi Jones and veteran soccer commentator John Shrader will call LA Galaxy games on the network, with Kelli Tennant serving as the Galaxy sideline reporter. Jones, a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, returns to provide color commentary and Shrader joins the network to call play-by-play.
"There is a tremendous excitement to continue to be part of the LA Galaxy's rich and storied tradition of excellence," said Jones, an 18-year veteran of the team. "Being in the booth for Time Warner Cable SportsNet allows me to share my passion for the Galaxy and soccer in general. I am looking forward to calling games for the 2013 MLS season and being part of what I hope is another championship run."
Jones, the "original" Cobi in Los Angeles, enters his second season in the broadcast booth for LA Galaxy games as the lead analyst. Jones has also worked behind the desk for ABC/ESPN, NBC, FOX and the Pac-12 Network. As one of the most decorated American soccer players, Jones won five championships during 12 seasons with the Galaxy, including two MLS Cups, two US Open Cup Championships and one CONCACAF Champions Cup. He is the Galaxy's all-time leader in games played and assists, as well as the US Men's National Team leader in caps. A three-time FIFA World Cup Player and former US Olympian, Jones retired from playing soccer in 2007 after an accomplished MLS and international soccer career and went on to be an assistant coach for the Galaxy, and later a consultant to the New York Cosmos. A native Angeleno, Jones is a UCLA Hall of Fame soccer player. He, his wife Kim and son Cayden call LA home.
"I'm excited to call LA Galaxy games on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and looking forward to working with Galaxy legend Cobi Jones," said Shrader. "I've been broadcasting MLS games for many years, and it's great to work with a team that is coming off of back-to-back MLS Cup championships."
Shrader has called high school and college football games for Time Warner Cable SportsNet and SoCal 101 previously and most recently spent 12 seasons calling play-by-play for San Jose Earthquakes games on FSN Bay Area and CSN California. He also spent 15 years as a sports anchor and host at KNBR Radio in San Francisco, where his assignments included covering the 49ers and the Giants. While in Northern California, he also called play-by-play for Oakland Athletics telecasts and San Jose State University football radio broadcasts. Shrader graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before getting his Master's in Mass Communications from San Jose State University and is currently a professor of Journalism and Media at Cal State Long Beach.
Tennant is originally from Temecula, CA and attended the University of Southern California (USC). While there, she played varsity volleyball for two seasons before transitioning to an on-camera role, working as a reporter for TrojanTV All-Access and providing color analysis for USC men's volleyball match webcasts. Tennant has also worked on high school football telecasts for Time Warner Cable SportsNet and SoCal 101 and previously worked for FOX Sports, ESPN, the Pac-12 Network, Longhorn Network, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and E! News. She resides in Los Angeles.
