Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms SHERLOCK Will Return for 4th Season

According to series star Benedict Cumberbatch, SHERLOCK will live to sleuth another season on the BBC.

The actor, who plays the infamous inspector, confirmed to London's Radio Times today that he and Martin Freeman - who's currently starring in Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT trilogy - had officially signed on for a fourth season.

"We've agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that," he said. "All I know at The Moment is I'm doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three."

The duo reportedly wish for the series to continue its run on BBC and BBC America for years to come, but notes that it all comes down to scheduling. Both men have become highly sought after since the series premiered.

Production on SHERLOCK's third season begins next week, with the series set to premiere on BBC in the fall.

Cumberbatch also starred in Steven Spielberg's War Horse film adaptation and in 2011 alternated leads in Danny Boyle's production of FRANKENSTEIN. He can most recently be seen in J.J. Abrams' upcoming film STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. His other theater credits include 'Hedda Gabler', for which he received an Olivier Award nomination.
