BWW Reviews: American Stage's THE AMISH PROJECT Is Spellbinding

We, in the Bay area, are so very fortunate to have such a stimulating, ambitious, and innovative, First Class, Professional Regional Theatre , as the American Stage Theatre Company in St. Petersburg. Other cities could only hope to have as diverse a venue, with extraordinary programming and production values, as "our" little gem.

"How can the Amish forgive such a thing?"

This is the haunting question by outsiders of the "plain and fancy", Lancaster, Pennsylvania shootings, of 10 Amish children October 2, 2006.

"The Amish Project", is playwright Jessica Dickey's solo production, now at the American Stage Theatre Company in St. Petersburg through May 12th.

The show revolves around an horrific act of violence, at the West Nickel Mines, one room school-house. Ten girls were bound with ties and shot. One actor plays seven characters; Eddie Stuckey, the gunman, Carol Stuckey, his wife, Anna age 14 and Velda age 6 (two Amish girls), America, age 16 Hispanic-(non-Amish), Sherry, age 53, -(non Amish), and Bill North, a mediator between the Amish and the rest of the world.

There are 6 plain, wooden chairs on the bare stage. The minimalistic set design by Greg Bierce, suggests the rural wooden, one room school-house. Mr. Bierce's brilliant use of 10 doors with clear lucite panels, is used as chalk boards, allowing the audience to see through them, as they are used in front and behind.

The inventive lighting design by Ian Mills, subtly enhances each character's appearance. The single costume design by Saiduh Ben Judah is perfectly Amish.

As all seven characters, Katherine Michelle Tanner's performance is simply, captivating. She transforms magically into each character, without a moment of hesitation. This is true artistry, of a multi-talented, stage veteran. Miss. Tanner gives a riveting, unforgettable performance, unlike any I have seen in years.

"The Amish Project", is a showcase for the masterful skills of director Todd Olsen. Mr Olsen's vision, insight, and obvious passion for this piece, makes it spellbinding! ~ BRAVO!
