Anne Hathaway & Garry Marshall to Reunite for PRINCESS DIARIES 3; Chris Pine to Return?
According to Garry Marshall, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (LES MISERABLES) will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis for PRINCESS DIARIES 3! The director tells PEOPLE, "I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan." He continues, "Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we're going to do it."In addition, Marshall hints that Chris Pine may also return for the project, reprising his role of Lord Nicholas Devereaux from the film franchise's second installment. Asked if the actor will make an appearance in the upcoming film, Marshall shares, "Maybe," but adds, "He's quite big now, you know."
The Princess Diaries, released in 2001, was based on Meg Cabot's 2000 novel of the same name. The film starred acting newcomer Anne Hathaway, in her film debut as Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the fictional Kingdom of Genovia, ruled by her grandmother Queen Dowager Clarisse Renaldi, as portrayed by actress and singer Julie Andrews.
It also starred Heather Matarazzo as Mia's best friend Lilly Moscovitz, Héctor Elizondo as Joseph, the Queen's Head of Security, Robert Schwartzman as Lilly's brother Michael, who has a crush on Mia, and Tito Ross as a backpack-wearing high school student.
Released in NORTH AMERICA on August 3, 2001, the film peaked at #3 at the box office. The Princess Diaries was a commercial success, grossing $165.3 million worldwide. The film was followed by a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, in August 2004.
