Deadline writes that Alec Baldwin has slated his first TV return since 30 ROCK in a new series for Universal TV and HBO.

Baldwin will star in and executive produce the show, which features a script by Wells Tower.

The actor will play "Joe Byrne, a billionaire real estate developer philanthropist, and celebrated socialite/tabloid fixture, who is unexpectedly rocketed into NYC politics when tragedy strikes the incumbent mayor and he is drafted to replace him."

Baldwin's character is also described as "a larger-than-life divorced entrepreneur whose burst into the political spotlight is made interesting by his appetite for women and a dark past."

"He's Trump without the baggage, Bloomberg but a Democrat, George Soros if he was in real estate," Baldwin said. "We've seen from shows like Kevin Spacey's HOUSE OF CARDS that you can go anywhere creatively. He throws Kate Mara's character in front of a subway train and you think, what the hell is going on? You can create these Shakespearean character arcs, and pull the curtain back on how New York City is actually run and how political careers are made and lost in the city."

Filming will begin in New York in September; the team is currently hunting for a director for the pilot.

Among Baldwin's upcoming big screen projects are ANDRON - THE BLACK LABYRINTH, ALOHA, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 and CONCUSSION. His recent credits include STILL ALICE opposite Oscar winner Julianne Moore, BLUE JASMINE, ROCK OF AGES and more.

Baldwin last appeared on Broadway in ORPHANS. Before that, he starred onstage in TWENTIETH CENTURY, SHORT TALKS ON THE UNIVERSE, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, SERIOUS MONEY and LOOT. Among his off-Broadway credits are ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE, SOUTH PACIFIC, MACBETH and PRELUDE TO A KISS.
