ABC's Award-winning comedy Modern Family will prove just how modern it can be when it takes on the subject of marriage equality in the September 25th season premiere titled 'Suddenly Last Summer.'

At last night's onstage "table read" of the episode, performed at FOX Studios in front of an audience of Emmy voters, executive producer Steven Levitan requested that the context of the storyline not be tweeted in order to avoid spoiling surprises.

Following the reading, the episode's writer, Jeffrey Richman said of the recent Supreme Court overturning of California's Prop 8, "I'm gay, and I was happier as a writer," explaining, "We would have been extremely unlucky writers had the decision gone the other way."

Cast members who participated in the special table read included Jessie Tyler Ferguson, Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould and Sarah Hyland.
