Catherine Cabeen/Hyphen to Present GIVE ME MORE World Premiere at TNC

Catherine Cabeen/Hyphen presents the world premiere of Give Me More, a three-part work exploring the relationship between conditioning, consumption, and self-worth. The program features choreography by Catherine Cabeen, a cast of seven performers, and lighting design by Philip Trevino.

Performances will take place Thursday-Saturday, January 25-27, at 8pm, at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, in Manhattan.

Give Me More unfolds in three chapters, each with a distinct lens on how our desires shape our identity and worldview, which in turn reshape our desires. The work begins with Glitter in the Gutter, a comedic duet created and performed by Cabeen and Kristina Berger that embodies the glamour and grit that weave together the lives of two aging performers.

The second part, This American Koan, is a work for seven dancers that highlights the intersecting of gender roles, overconsumption, and environmental destruction. Incorporating an original score by Mark Katsaounis, text, drag performance, highly kinetic and sensuous movement, and an interactive set made of 200 pounds of recycled clothing, This American Koan asks us to reconsider our consumptive habits. The work is performed by Cabeen with Nya Bowman, Darby Canessa, Hector Cerna, Sarah Lustbader, Kathryn Maclellan, and Trebien Pollard.

Completing the program is ...yet again, a solo performed by Cabeen to the music of composer/multi-instrumentalist Westin Portillo. The work explores the quest for personal agency. In a world where we are so often told who to be and what to want, ...yet again is a rallying cry impelling us to advocate for ourselves and each other.

The 2018 season at Theater for the New City marks Cabeen's sixth evening-length work since forming Hyphen in 2009 and her second full-length concert in New York City.

Catherine Cabeen is an artist and teacher. As a choreographer, Cabeen has received commissions from On the Boards in Seattle, Donald Byrd's Spectrum Dance Theater, Seattle Art Museum, Gallery Galleon in Vieques, Puerto Rico, the Visa2Dance Festival in Dar Es Salaam, Alsarab Dance Company in Byblos, Lebanon, and Texas Women's University, among others.

Cabeen founded her interdisciplinary performance company Hyphen in 2009 in Seattle (where she was based from 2006 to 2012). In 2011, the New York Times called the work of Cabeen's Hyphen, "highly kinetic, complex... visually exquisite," and "beautifully performed." A forum for the intersection of ideas, Hyphen seeks to embrace diversity and celebrate the multifaceted nature of the human experience. Having created a series of works that explore the relationship between visual and performance art history, and several works that play with the dynamics between live musicians and dancers, Cabeen is currently investigating the metaphoric relationship between bio-tensegrity and intersectional feminism.

Hyphen has created three evening-length works inspired by New Realists. On the Boards in Seattle commissioned Into the Void, based on the life and work of Yves Klein, in 2011. On the Boards also commissioned Fire! in 2013, fueled by reflections on Niki de Saint Phalle's Shooting Paintings. In 2012, the Seattle Art Museum commissioned an evening-length site-specific work, Where They May, inspired by Saint Phalle's monumental Tarot Garden for the Olympic Sculpture Park. This project led Hyphen to create several site-specific works in collaboration with art museums including the Mahaney Art Museum in VT, Grounds for Sculpture in NJ, and the Seattle Art Museum. Hyphen's constantly evolving repertory for the stage has toured throughout the United States as well as to Ireland, Tanzania, and Lebanon.

Cabeen is a former member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (1997-2005), and was Jones' assistant choreographer on the original production of Spring Awakening at the Atlantic Theater. She is also a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company (2005), and Richard Move/MoveOpolis! (2006-2017) among others. In Seattle, she performed in her own work and as a guest artist with Donald Byrd's Spectrum Dance Theater. Cabeen was a finalist in the Joyce Theater's The A.W.A.R.D. Show! Seattle in 2009, and named Emerging Choreographer at Bates Dance Festival in 2011. Cabeen is an assistant professor of dance at Marymount Manhattan College and a repetiteur for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Cabeen has been on the faculties of the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, Cornish College, University of Washington, and Middlebury College.
