Palaver Strings, a Boston-based string ensemble and nonprofit, will tour the west coast for the first time, presenting concerts and educational workshops in Venice, Santa Clarita, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Carson. Currently in residence at the Boston Center for the Arts, Palaver is passionate about bringing classical music to diverse audiences and spaces, and has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center, a sold-out Groupmuse in a New York speakeasy, and hospitals, schools, and shelters in Boston and beyond.
Palaver's tour program, Voice in the Crowd, explores the relationship between the individual and the group, the "self" and the other. At the center of the program is Even, a concerto grosso by Los Angeles composer Ian Gottlieb, who wrote it specifically for Palaver in its first year as an ensemble. Like other concerto grossi before it, Even juxtaposes unity and individuality, mirroring Palaver's creative process as a conductorless ensemble. Alongside Corelli's joyous 'Christmas Concerto' and Biber's vivid depiction of war in Battalia à 10, this program explores our struggle to make our voices heard in a chaotic world.
In addition to the concerts, Palaver will present three educational workshops with local organizations. Members of the ensemble will coach and perform alongside young musicians from the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra, the San Diego Youth Symphony, and the Harmony Project in LA. Community engagement and education are central to Palaver's mission, as the ensemble seeks to use chamber music as a vehicle for communication and personal expression.
