The Lab is "arguably one of the best-kept cultural secrets in the Berkshire County summer repertoire" (Berkshire Eagle)

On Friday, July 17th at 8:30 and 10:30 the Williams College Summer Theatre Lab is proud to present Broadway's Michael Winther and acclaimed jazz pianist Dan Tepfer IN CONCERT: a unique evening of well known standards, as well as contemporary and classic popular songs that explore the intersection between jazz improvisation, musical theatre and popular music. Their eclectic set will include songs by Williams College alum Stephen Sondheim, singer/songwriter John Mayer, and jazz composer Fred Hersch as well as Lennon and McCartney. They will be performing for one night only-Friday July 17th, 8:30 and 10:30 pm at the CenterStage of the '62 Center for Theatre and Dance. Admission is free. Call 413 597 4839 for reservations.

On Saturday, July 18th at 8:30, the Lab will present Dan Tepfer's Variations on Bach's Goldberg Variations. Mr. Tepfer, an acclaimed jazz pianist who was recently praised for his "brilliant career" in the New York Times, has been studying J.S. Bach's classic work, the Goldberg Variations, for a number of years, mainly, as he puts it, "for fun". In the past six months, however, starting with a solo tour through the Czech Republic and France, he has been performing them in public, and -- as befits a musician whose career has been built mainly within the contemporary jazz world -- incorporating improvisation into the mix. Saturday July 18th at 8:30 PM in the CenterStage of the 62 Center for Theatre and Dance. Admission is free. Call 413 597 4839 for reservations.

Michael Winther (Williams '85), whose credits include Mamma Mia, 1776, Songs From An Unmade Bed (2006 Drama Desk Nominee), "stakes out the most fertile artistic territory in American music: the high ground where show tunes, art songs and the singer-songwriter tradition merge. Mr. Winther has both the voice and the intelligence for the job," says the New York Times.

Dan Tepfer, 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition Winner and American Pianists Association 2007-2009 Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz, "embodies a resolutely fresh approach to the piano, somewhere between classical music and jazz," says Paris' La Terrace.
