Huntington Theatre Company Plans to Stage 15 Sondheim Pieces

By:

Boston's Huntington Theatre Company is putting some stock in legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim.

According to The Boston Globe, have launched a new Sondheim initiative, in which they will stage 15 of his beloved works over the course of the next few years.

"We're making an ambitious leap into his work,' artistic director Peter DuBois told the publication. "A lot of theater companies have done a lot of Sondheim, but I don't know of any company that's done this kind of full immersion with an artist.'

As of now, SWEENEY TODD, FOLLIES, INTO THE WOODS and more are on tap, which will "be presented at several different theaters, some productions will originate at the Huntington and some will be imported from England or elsewhere," per the report.

"We really want this to be a combination of original productions that we create in Boston, with our own point of view artistically, as well as productions that I feel or Mr. Sondheim feels are seminal productions that Boston audiences need to see," DuBois added.

As reported earlier this week, after 33 years, Boston University and Huntington Theater Company have decided to end their partnership in order to achieve "different goals."

BU will be relocating its theatre arts student operations to its Charles River Campus, while Huntington will be focusing on modernizing their venue, either by buying a new building or forming a new partnership to make changes to their existing spaces.

The Huntington has transferred 16 productions to New York, including two in 2012: the Broadway premiere of Lydia R. Diamond's Stick Fly and the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of Stephen Karam's Sons of the Prophet, named a 2012 Pulitzer Prize finalist. The Huntington champions new play development and the local theatre community through its operation of the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, which the Huntington built in 2004.
