Artisan's Asylum to Host Winter Open Studios, 12/6-7

By:

Artisan's Asylum, now one of the largest collaborative maker/art/hacker spaces in the USA, will hold its third annual Winter Open Studios on December 6th and 7th, from 12 noon to 6PM on Saturday and 12 noon to 4PM on Sunday. It is free and open to the public, and families are welcome. Dozens of makers, crafters, jewelers, engineers and artists will participate.

Studios and workshops will be open for viewing and art will be for sale. Some things visitors might see include crazy weird bikes, robots, collages, didgeridoos, quilts, and jewelry. Visitors will be able to tour group fabrication spaces and individual studios, purchase unique artworks, and talk to the people who made them. Watch makers weld, enamel copper, fire glass, tinker, 3D print and more.

Artisan's Asylum, founded in 2010, has burgeoned to 40,000 square feet of warehouse today, making it one of the largest collaborative maker space in the USA. The young non-profit is cited regularly in the press for its innovative business development model and vibrant creative community, most recently in Make, The Boston Globe, and USA Today. It hosts robust facilities for woodworking, welding and metal fabrication, a jewelry nexus, glassworking, electronics, robotics, screen-printing and sewing facilities. A variety of membership types are available, as well as storage and studio rental. The Asylum offers a wide range of classes every month, from bike frame building to woodworking to glass blowing, circuit hacking, jewelry making and more.

Artisan's Asylum is at 10 Tyler Street in Somerville. There is free lot parking available across the street. It is close to stops on #87 bus, #83 bus, #86 bus and within ten minutes of both Porter and Davis Squares. See also www.artisansasylum.com.
