I searched the board, but didn't find this particular flavor of love as a thread of its own... so, what are your favorite songs about unrequited love, or further, a love that was not meant to be - I need to compile a playlist to aurally drown my sorrows in.
My current loop:
1 - Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (Pal Joey) 2 - As Long as He Needs Me (Oliver!) 3 - I Dreamed a Dream (Les Miserables) 4 - Losing My Mind (Follies)
i am partial to the Carpenters-style folk duet from ASSASSINS...."Unworthy of Your Love".

one or both of us will want to get out.
But I also guarantee that if I don't
ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for
the rest of my life..."
Technically not exactly unrequited love, but "If I Can't Love Her," from Beauty and the Beast. It's really about the Beast wishing he knew HOW to love, but it's the same general feeling.
Also, "Where's The Girl" from Scarlet Pimpernel, which is technically about EX-love.

Well an off-line friend just suggested "Easy to Love" from Anything Goes... but that is unfortunately at the wrong end of the emotional spectrum I'm currently overwhelmed by. It's plainly clear... he would not be so easy to love...
"Love Look Away" from FLOWER DRUM SONG, especially as sung by Marilyn Horne (dubbing for Reiko Sato) to Alfred Newman's gorgeous arrangement in the 1961 film version.
My Avatar is the amazing young singer, James Anest

the LA (Taper Forum)/B'way/tour version of LOVE LOOK AWAY from the FLOWER DRUM revival was also beautifully orchestrated and sung.....that is a fine, fine chart.
And so is FINE FINE LINE from AVENUE Q.

Well I found a treasure trove with Rodgers and Hart... Falling In Love With Love (The Boys from Syracuse), Can't You Do a Friend a Favor? (Connecticut Yankee...)...
