How was Tyne Daly as Rose?#1
Posted: 7/6/08 at 10:11pm
I've only seen recordings and to me this is what I think:
1. She can't sing, but is a good actress.
2. Runs around the stage way too much in "Rose's Turn"
But I don't want to jump to conclusions...for those of you who have seen Ms. Daly, how would you rate her Rose?

I loved that entire production...
Love Jonathan Hadary.
Tyne in person, onstage was fab, IMHO. She's an underappreicated actress, I believe. The production values of the show were great.

The whole experience, however, was sooooo depressing during the Tony Awards that year, because of poor Tyne's divorce drama. I used to live near her during that time, and she appeared so in distress (just walking alone on Columbus Ave.) Right after winning the TONY.

She was terrific, I loved Lansbury and Peters, Daly brought a drive and humanity to the role that was breathtaking and in person she sang it.
The recording, unfortunately, was piss poor and didn't capture her "magic".

The recording IS a travesty. But from the clips I've seen, her acting makes up her terrible singing. I love what she does with her ending of "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Laurents loves having his Roses go crazy with that letter! And I love it.

Now the real question is how does she compare to LuPone?

i love Tyne Daly.

Zeitojuo - you ask a lot of questions. Why?
"I don't see that many plays, and for me, musicals are rarely pleasing. I feel the actors are being put through a kind of nightmarish labor. They're like animals being forced to pull heavy carts of vegetables at incredible speeds." --- Wallace Shawn

He really does ask too much. Why even bring up a comparison with LuPone. You know it's going to start a bunch of crap. They both won Tonys for the role, so that speaks for itself.

Two different actors, two Tony awards, two GREAT performances; however, two very different performances.

That is all re: How was Tyne Daly as Rose?

She never had to wear slippers on stage to bring attention to herself.

Ordinary Jukebox said it very well.

Thank you CurtainPullDowner.

To be honest, I couldn't even see her feet from the front row, so, I don't care what she wears. Although, I always thought it was better for a broken toe to wear hard shoes? I could be wrong, and after seeing her performance, I don't give a flying monkey what she's wearing on her feet.

OK
But the last thing you want to wear for a broken toe is slippers.
Tyne Daly acted the shoes out of the part.

I'm sitting her laughing myself silly at the thought of anyone playing Rose needing to wear slippers to draw attention to herself. Yes. I'm sure that's it. If it weren't for those slippers, I'm sure she'd worry that no one would notice her on the stage at all. LOL.

Curtain has yet to fail turning ANY Gypsy thread into an anti-Patti thread.

It's really quite sad and and tiresome.

I went to see Tyne multiple times in Gypsy. I'm not sure that even if she had been in the best of voice, that the cast recording would have captured what made that performance work. But she was a strong, funny and scary Rose in the theatre and the vocals didn't suffer as much in person, at least for me.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

She has said herself that the recording was done when she was ill and not in good voice -- that the producers insist it be done then. This is why she has said herself she doesn't like the recording and won't sign autographs on it if someone gives her a CD to sign.

Her voice was not that great, but she had tremendous heart and soul as
Mama Rose. She brought another feeling to the role.

I loved her!!!!

I was very disappointed in that production. I thought Hadary was the best part. Everything's Coming Up Roses was Daly's best number.

It was a great production. It toured for about 6 mos before coming to NYC so the production had kind of a bus and truck feel which worked. It was beautifully cast and I don't think there's ever been a better Tessie than Barbara Erwin who must have been in her 60's at the time and had the best body on that stage. And, yes, Hadary is my favorite Herbie. Let's face it, Herbie is a pretty thankless role but he brought some life to it and his chemistry with Daly was great. Daly herself was pretty amazing. Did she have amazing vocals? No. But she didn't need them.
