Movies, books, theater, it's all game here.

Have you ever really liked a character in some sort of media and then they did something completely horrible and shocking? How did that make you feel?

By a flip of the same coin, have you ever hated a character and then they surprised you somehow?

Sondheim & Wheeler made Sweeney likeable
and
Sondheim & Weidman made the presidental Assassins stangely likeable
by making them seem so human. I think by revealing their motivations, perhaps?

"As we all should probably have learned by now, to be a Stephen Sondheim fan is to have one's heart broken at regular intervals" - Frank Rich

Dearest, how can this be so? You were dead, you know. - Candide

Oh my god, this show has everything! Half naked guys and girl on girl action! - [title of show]

I always hate it when Effie says Deena "can't sing like I can". It was always such a bitchy comment.

At the end of the day, as much as you may have wanted to like Lucy Harris or feel bad for her like Jekyll, she was still a prostitute/"saucy lounge singer".

In "Brave New World", you start to feel for Bernard, and then he becomes an a-hole exploiting the hell out of John the Savage....

And of course, Professor Snape, the perfect example

Fear no more the heat o' the sun, Nor the furious winter's rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone and ta'en thy wages: Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. ~Cymbeline

i hate it when mrs. lovett sings "not while i'm around" to toby, when afterwards she has every intention of killing him. it's just such a powerful, moving song and she totally ruins it, it breaks my heart every time i watch sweeney.

When Oscar (literally, in the stage play) dumps Charity.
I get why he felt the needto leave her, but still...

...god that musical is so depressing, but uplifting at the same time.

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

I think Mimi shoving heroin into Roger's face is pretty awful.
Melchior pretty much raping Wendla
and if you find Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett likeable (i do) then I don't think i need to say more!

You get them ALL over Shakespeare. First one that sprung to mind was Claudio from 'Much Ado About Nothing'. He seems a fairly bland and inoffensive romantic lead, then he gets pissy, and abusive, and just plain MEAN, and you wonder why Hero would ever consent to marry him after. And my nerdy "crush" on Hal doesn't prevent me from seeing that actually, he has his moments too, whether turning his back on Falstaff in 'Henry IV', or ordering the deaths of all French prisoners in 'Henry V'. I know Hamlet has a lot of fans; god only know why, I totally support Claudius in all his endeavours with that play.

Also, to get away from theatre, I get really annoyed whenever Rico in 'Six Feet Under' is stupid or offensive, like being ragingly homophobic, giving a stripper money for her tits, whatever. Bahhhhh! It's always the cute ones!

I hated Sara Sidle on the TV show CSI: Las Vegas.

Then she made me "like" her by leaving re: Most despicable act by a likable character?

Best and smartest thing Jorja/the character ever did.
