Sorry to start one of these types of threads, but I figured it's better than another one on the Tony Awards.
I'm looking to buy tickets to a show this summer, and I've narrowed it down to either South Pacific or Damn Yankees. I found seats at both, but I'm having trouble choosing between the two. I know that Damn Yankees hasn't started yet so it's hard to recommend one over the other, but I was hoping people would still be able to give me some insight. Thanks!
South pacific is amazing and the cast for Damn Yankees is great... I'd say Damn Yankees because it is only running for a month unless it extends! Or if you want to be guaranteed a great production with top notch actors go with South Pacific. I am fortunate enough to see both. I saw South Pacific a week before opening and I'm gonna see Damn Yankees in July!
I was going to say Damn Yankees as well for the same reasons. South Pacific will be around for awhile but Damn Yankees is only a few weeks.

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
If you think you'll be able to catch South Pacific at some later date, see Damn Yankees while you can. But frankly, while I expect Damn Yankees to be quite good, it's going to be awfully hard to come anywhere close to the glory that is South Pacific. Let alone top it.
I don't know, I feel that DAMN YANKEES has a top-notch cast and will only be running for three weeks, and unlike GYPSY I'm pretty sure this one has no chance of transferring. SOUTH PACIFIC is settled for a long-lasting run, I had to make the same choice, and I picked DAMN YANKEES (then again it was never really a question for me given Jane Krakowski's involvement in DAMN YANKEES).
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
If you will be getting back to NY in the next 6 months I agree with the above posters: See DY.
However: if you have no idea the next time you will be able to see a Broadway show...you must see SP...it is a thing of utter beauty. I've never been so entranced with a revival, and it now tops my list of favorite productions. (Well, at least top 5...and I see a LOT.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
dramma...I also agree with this thought, but I am hoping SP will develop a touring production (although, yes, it might not be wuite like seeing it in Bwy), and there is a better chance of seeing it in the future (besides the fact that I think it will be around for a while in Bwy...!)
When I went to the box office at the Vivian Beaumont a few weeks ago to buy tickets for SOUTH PACIFIC for December, the people in front of me wanted tickets for that weekend and the box office man said they were sold out until July.
There is no doubt that as theatre, SOUTH PACIFIC is in a class by itself. It won the Pulitzer Prize the year that it opened. If you opt to see the limited run of DAMN YANKEES, a very entertaining show, make sure that you plan way ahead to see SOUTH PACIFIC, especially if you choose the limited number of $75 seats. As you must be aware, SP got rave reviews and is a must see show.
