i've been thinking a lot about this lately- I was bought up in a household where every artist was judged on their personal life- every time time Bing Crosby's name came up, it was followed by "you know he was an alcoholic child abuser..." or "don't listen to Judy Garland, she was a drug addict", "Get that Wagner off, he was anti-semitic!". Vanessa Redgrave was out, as well, due to her anti-zionist oscar speech, and her radical left wing politics. don't watch "Gigi", Maurice Chevalier was a Nazi collaborator, Frank Sinatra left his first wife for that "boozy old tinker, Ava Gardner".
It got exhausting.
I don't like Wagner's politics, and I probably would have hated him as a person. But I find his music magical.

I make a point of separating the artist from the art. Roman Polanski may have liked a bit of a kiddy-fiddle, but that doesn't make 'Chinatown' any less of a stonking film. Chris Langham may have child porn on his PC and no good excuse, but 'The Thick Of It' is still the funniest sitcom I've ever seen and he's a big part of why. I admit I do cringe a bit when he compares himself to a disgraced geography teacher, but I really truly wish I didn't. I get kinda upset when people refuse to watch 'The Thick Of It' purely because of Langham's "extra-curriculars". It's awesome. re: Separating the artist from the art

Well, -I'm quite sure that a lot of my favorite art was and is produced by artists with whom I might have a problem if I knew their backgrounds.

In other words, what I don't know doesn't hurt me!

Snafu, why can't you watch Disney films?

Roscoe I was being facetious.... if we feel we can't separate an artist from his art, then can we separate Disney's reputed anti-semitism and bigotry from his films?
