what did gay men wear in the 80s?#1
Posted: 1/10/08 at 1:43am
i was just a little tike in the 80s and certainly didnt pay attention to what the hip gay man was wearing the 1980s - but for a show i'm doing i need some options - it's a comedy so the more outrageous the better.

Try those things called books. re: what did gay men wear in the 80s? And, you know, not relying on people on the internet to get you out of doing research.

I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

Pick up a recent International Male catalog.

All tops wore tight jeans, boots and plaid shirts. All bottoms wore tight jeans, crayons (shoes with different colored gel bottoms) and really skinny ties.

Really baggy pants with tons of pleats, pockets and multiple zippers were big too. Sort of like a space age version of cargo pants but with tapered legs. (still available at International Male, as Foster says)

Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

Mine were Cavaricci's. The same style was made in nylon, known as parachute pants. Along with Crayons, I wore Cappezio's.

I was an out-of-step, in-denial theatre nerd in the '80s. My attire was as timeless and confused then as it would be today.

It has never gone out of style, because it has never been IN style.

Take that, you bitches!

*sings*

...A trip to the library has made a new girl of me. For suddenly I can see, the magic of books!...

Along with everything previously mentioned, I remember the boys going through a "preppy" trend: Pastel Izod shirts with the collars turned up, burgundy red topsiders with leather laces, etc.

Good Luck.

A fairly good synopsis of all the styles from Wikpedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980s_in_fashion#Dancewear

What I loved about the 80's was that I could mix and match all of them and get away with it -- preppy by day, disco/flashdance by night -- leather slut on the weekends. Good times.

When I thought of posting what my favorite outfit was when I went 'out', I thought, "Nah - no one would believe it." But, aspects of every bit of it has been mentioned in the thread already!

A neon-bright, canary-yellow, double-breasted shirt - open at the skinny collar. A woven-metallic, red, skinny tie hangly loosely (the effect was like the ruby slippers!) Very tight, white painter's pants. And bright red 'Crayons' with yellow gel soles.

For some reason I'm thinking of the 'are you gay enough?' thread. I guess the answer is, was, and ever shall be a resounding YES!

My favorite outfit: black sleeveless shirt with the collar open to the waist with a neon royal blue skinny tie, silver studded belt on leg hugging black leather pants, neon royal blue Crayons or black leather cowboy boots with silver trim and four inch heels.
